The Sacrament of Baptism

Baptismal Classes

These sessions are scheduled periodically as requests for the Sacrament come in. As you plan your child's baptism, please be aware of this reasonable brief delay. This allows us to offer the class for a small group, rather than for each individual couple. Young couples frequently appreciate the opportunity to meet peer couples with new or young children.

A question is frequently raised as to who can serve as a Godparent. The role of Godparent is to support and encourage the faith development of the child baptized, as well as supportive influence on the parents. For this purpose, the Church asks that Godparents be fully initiated Catholics (having received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation), and actively participating in their faith. Two Godparents are customary. At least one must be an active Catholic who has received these early Sacraments.

Those families who have children of school age who are not baptized can inquire about faith formation and sacrament preparation through our Religious Formation Program. Preparation is tailored according to the age of the child and individual needs. This is often a wonderful opportunity to encourage families to attend to any pastoral questions regarding marriage or other faith or Church related concerns.

Baptisms are typically done after the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday. On occasion, a baptism may take place during one of the weekend liturgies. Unless the child or the family is involved with the RCIA program, (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) baptisms are discouraged during Lent, especially late in the season.

All baptisms

can be scheduled with Father John or Deacon Andy Fairbanks.
